Health Insurance Types

Affordable Care Act (ACA/ Obamacare) “The comprehensive health care reform law enacted in March 2010 (sometimes known as ACA, PPACA, or “Obamacare”). The law has 3 primary goals: Make affordable health insurance available to more people.”

American Health Care Act (AHCA /Trumpcare) “There is no individual mandate. Instead, states can apply for a waiver that would allow them to make their own rules that encourage people to maintain health insurance coverage year-round. Like the ACA, the AHCA sets up a system where a person who stays insured, without an extended gap in coverage, will typically not pay a different price for health insurance based on whether or not that person has a pre-existing condition.”

Medicare for All “Medicare-for-all has meant single-payer health insurance, a national government-run program that covered every American and replaced private coverage entirely, similar to the government-run health care programs in Canada and some European countries.”

Medicare X  “The bill would leave the existing health care system intact, but would create a public option for Medicare, allowing individuals of any age to purchase plans that would include access to the program’s network of health care providers and ObamaCare’s range of benefits, like maternity care and mental health services. Currently, only adults 65 and older can participate in Medicare…It would also expand access to tax credits that help people buy ObamaCare coverage and would allow those credits to be used for Medicare X plans. Under those changes, individuals would pay no more than 13 percent of their income toward their insurance premiums for a standard health plan.”

Private insurance “The word private is used to describe any health insurance plan that is not run by the federal or state government. Private insurance can be purchased from a variety of sources: your employer, a state or federal marketplace, or a private marketplace like Policygenius.”

Public option “To expand health care, such as allowing people to buy into a state Medicaid program regardless of income.”

Single-payer System “The government steps in (rather than insurance companies) as the intermediary between patients and providers in health-care transactions.”

Universal Health Care “A system that provides quality medical services to all citizens. The federal government offers it to everyone regardless of their ability to pay.”

Voucher program “Under the healthcare voucher system, the government would give each individual or family a voucher that would permit them to buy a health insurance policy from a private insurer.”
